Philosophy: We realize that creating a school-home connection is important to school success. Therefore, thoughtful home engagement that scaffolds student learning is something we support. We are mindful that in order for children to be fully invested in their learning at school, they need time to unwind, play, develop outside interests, spend time with their families, and get a good night’s sleep. The following homework guidelines have been developed to allow families some flexibility in creating a homework schedule that enhances their family life.
Guidelines: • Reading and math logs will continue to emphasize students developing personal goal setting skills; these goals will be initiated through a teacher/student partnership. • Teachers will provide options for reinforcement and enrichment. • Students will prepare for all tests and quizzes. • Ample time to complete daily work is provided in class, but, on occasion, some students will need to complete unfinished work at home.
5th Grade: • Reading will be completed and logged four times a week. • Math activities will be completed four times each week. Students will choose activities from math menus and complete StudyLinks as assigned. • Writing activities will be completed two times a week.
5th Graders are expected to do: Reading - 4 nights a week for at least 30 minutes per night This should be logged in your planner and reading log (ex: I read Harry Potter 3 for 35 minutes)
Math - 4 nights a week for at least 30 minutes per night - Look at our class website for games and other practice sheets - This must be logged in your planner (ex: I did study link 1.6 for 15 minutes and played Factor Captor online for 20 minutes)
Writing - 2 nights a week for at least 30 minutes per night - Some nights you may have assigned writing, but most nights you may write whatever you wish. Use the "menu" we're creating in the back of your notebook to get ideas. Unless you are publishing on your laptop, all writing should be done in your writer's notebook. NEVER tear pages out of your notebook. - This must be logged in your planner (ex: I wrote about my soccer game for 30 minutes or I worked on my fiction story for 40 minutes)
